Residents near Makry Gialos beach, 10km from the blaze's epicenter, are feeling the effects of thick smoke, resulting in road closures and significant health concerns, particularly among older individuals. Authorities have reported power outages and mandated the evacuation of hotels and homes in the Ferma municipality due to the advancing fire.
So far, approximately 1,500 people have evacuated to Ierapetra, with some seeking refuge in indoor sports facilities. The firefighting effort has intensified, deploying 155 firefighters, specialized teams, and aircraft for water drops. Additional resources are en route to aid in the battle against the flames.
