Storm Eowyn has taken Ireland by storm, quite literally! On Friday, the powerful weather event left over 715,000 customers without power—almost a third of the country’s total. With wind gusts as high as 114 miles per hour recorded in County Galway, Eowyn has shattered previous weather records.
The Irish Meteorological Service warned of dangerous conditions sweeping across Northern Ireland, Scotland, and the northern parts of England. Travel plans were thrown into disarray as strong winds affected rail services and grounded hundreds of flights. Belfast International Airport even advised people to stay home as they faced intermittent power outages.
Additionally, meteorologists predicted rain and even potential hail and snow in some hill areas of Scotland. The jet stream, usually between 190 and 220 m.p.h., surged to an impressive 260 m.p.h. before the storm struck, giving Eowyn extra power to wreak havoc—a situation not seen since the severe storms of 2017. Now that's a weather event you won't forget!
