Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has issued a stern warning to a flotilla heading toward Gaza, urging them to cease their mission to deliver humanitarian aid. Meloni stated that this action could derail a fragile peace initiative proposed by the US, which has sparked some hope of resolving the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.

The Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF), which consists of over 40 boats and is being escorted by an Italian naval frigate, is on high alert due to increased drone activity in the area. As they approach Gaza's shoreline, Meloni emphasized the precarious nature of current diplomatic efforts, warning that the flotilla could serve as a 'pretext' for violence.

I fear that the flotilla's attempt to break the Israeli naval blockade could serve as a pretext to do so, she cautioned, suggesting that the humanitarian aid could be delivered to an Israeli port instead. The flotilla includes over 500 individuals, such as notable activists, and has vowed to continue sailing despite the risks.

Efforts to find a compromise are underway, as Italian officials have suggested dropping the aid in Cyprus to avoid confrontation with Israel. Meloni stressed, Any other choice risks becoming a pretext for preventing peace, fueling conflict and therefore affecting above all the people of Gaza. Meanwhile, the GSF has remained resolute, asserting that their humanitarian mission will not backtrack.

The flotilla's mission comes amid reports of hostile engagements, including drone activity and prior threats from unidentified vessels. With the situation rapidly evolving, leaders continue to advocate for peace and safety in the region.
