In brief

Iranian officials met with European diplomats to discuss the future of their nuclear program, following conflicts that saw military actions against Iran’s nuclear sites.

Iran recently held its first nuclear talks with diplomats from the UK, Germany, and France in Istanbul, Turkey, since Israeli airstrikes targeted its nuclear facilities in June, igniting a brief conflict. Known as the E3, these European powers are reconsidering the nuclear agreement established in 2015, which aimed to limit Iran’s nuclear activities in exchange for the lifting of sanctions. The discussions were described as "serious, frank, and detailed" by Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi. He emphasized the importance of continuing consultations but warned that any new sanctions would be considered "completely illegal." Following Trump’s withdrawal from the original nuclear deal in 2018, US sanctions were reapplied, causing Iran to ramp up nuclear activities beyond the agreed terms. The E3 has set a deadline for progress toward a new agreement by the end of August, threatening severe sanctions if no resolution is achieved. Meanwhile, Rafael Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), mentioned that Iran has indicated readiness to engage technically over its nuclear program, urging Iran for maximum transparency.Tension remains high, with Iran's foreign ministry calling for the E3 to address past unconstructive actions and protest against the US-Israeli strategy. Despite the challenges, both sides have acknowledged the need for ongoing dialogue to resolve impending nuclear issues.
