In brief

Iran and Russia aim to create a natural‑gas pipeline with a capacity of 110 billion cubic meters, beginning with 55 billion cubic meters in the first two to three years. The plan includes a swap scheme through Azerbaijan for quick initial transmission.

Iran announced plans to build a gas pipeline with Russia that could carry up to 110 billion cubic meters of natural gas, according to Ambassador Kazem Jalali, who spoke on Iranian state television on November 8.

Jalali said the project would be carried out in two stages. In the first phase, the pipeline could transport 55 billion cubic meters within two to three years.

The final stage would aim for a total capacity of 110 billion cubic meters. The ambassador described two options for the short‑term solution: restoring existing pipelines and working with Azerbaijan, or using a swap scheme that delivers gas from Russia to northern Azerbaijan and a matching volume from southern Azerbaijan to Iran.

In a statement, Jalali emphasized that natural‑gas cooperation would develop in two stages, with the swap scheme being the fastest option to begin transmission while long‑term infrastructure is built.
