Japan's Nikkei Posts 3rd‑Largest Point Drop on Record as AI‑Linked Stocks Tumble

In brief

Japan’s benchmark Nikkei index plunged 3,643 points (5.96%) on Nov. 6, marking its third‑largest point decline ever. AI‑related stocks led the sell‑off, spurred by concerns over tighter U.S. post‑midterm standards for data centers and AI investments. The broader Topix index also fell nearly 6%, reflecting a market-wide pullback across the Prime Market.

Japan’s benchmark Nikkei index slid 3,643.13 points, a 5.96 percent fall, on Friday, Nov. 6, 2026, following a steep intraday plunge of more than 4,300 points. This move marks the third‑largest point drop in the index’s history, according to Xinhua.

The decline was fueled by heavy selling of AI‑related and semiconductor shares. Investors grew wary of stricter U.S. regulations that could emerge after Democratic gains in the midterm elections, as they might limit data‑center approvals and AI investment projects.

The broader Topix index also fell sharply, shedding 232.40 points, or 5.90 percent, to close at 3,707.99, its lowest level since mid‑April.

By late trading, the sell‑off had spread into almost every stock on the Prime Market, showing a market‑wide retreat rather than isolated technical glitches.

Analysts point out that, in addition to regulatory concerns, warnings of a potential economic slowdown broadened the scope of the panic, dragging technology names into a wider slump.

With the Nikkei at its lowest close since after the Japanese election in early April and the Topix reflecting similar distress, investors seemed to fear that rising U.S. regulatory stringency and weak global growth could curb Japan’s tech‑heavy corporate earnings.
