UK Targets Israeli Settler Leader with Sanctions

The UK imposes sanctions on Daniella Weiss, a key figure in Israel's settler movement, as tensions escalate in the region.

In a decisive move, the UK government has sanctioned Daniella Weiss, a prominent Israeli settler leader known as the "godmother" of the settler movement, for her role in promoting violence against Palestinians. The announcement, made by Foreign Secretary David Lammy, emphasizes the UK's commitment to holding extremist settlers accountable amid rising tensions in the Israeli-occupied territories. At 79, Weiss heads a radical group called Nachala, which has been instrumental in establishing Jewish settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem—territories captured during the 1967 war. Despite the consensus among many in the international community deeming these settlements illegal, Israel contests this claim. Alongside Weiss, sanctions were extended to other settlers and organizations linked to illegal outposts. In response, Weiss declared her intent to establish settlements in Gaza, while the UK government criticized Israel for its ongoing actions that threaten peace and the two-state solution. This development follows a joint statement from global leaders urging Israel to cease military operations and allow humanitarian aid into Gaza, which has faced significant restrictions.
