At least 79 people have died from an unknown disease displaying flu-like symptoms in the south-western region of the Democratic Republic of Congo. According to the health ministry, most of the deceased are teenagers aged 15 to 18. Reports indicate that over 300 individuals are infected, exhibiting symptoms such as fever, headaches, coughs, and breathing difficulties.
Response teams are now deployed in Kwango Province, particularly in the Panzi health zone, to manage cases and investigate the disease's nature. Local civil society leader Cephorien Manzanza flagged the alarming rise in cases, noting that the rural locality struggles to secure necessary medical supplies. A World Health Organization (WHO) official confirmed that they are gathering samples for laboratory analysis.
Authorities have advised the public to stay calm and cautious, encouraging frequent hand washing, avoiding large gatherings, and refraining from touching deceased bodies without proper medical guidance. A local politician reported that around 67 cases of illness and deaths were noted between November 10 and November 26. Urgent assistance is needed, as Panzi hospital faces medicine shortages amidst this crisis. The DR Congo is also combating an outbreak of mpox and has a history of managing Ebola outbreaks.
