In brief

Pituffik, formerly Thule Air Base, in Greenland plays a vital role in American defense systems and is gaining attention as the U.S. looks to strengthen ties to the island.

Pituffik Space Base, previously known as Thule Air Base, is situated in northwestern Greenland and stands as one of the most strategically vital military locations for the United States — though few Americans are familiar with it. "It is quite literally the outermost eye of American defense," stated defense analyst Peter Ernstved Rasmussen. The base plays a crucial role in missile detection and defense, monitoring for potential threats from the skies. Currently, about 150 personnel from the U.S. Air Force and Space Force are stationed at Pituffik to manage surveillance and missile defense systems. The Upgraded Early Warning Radar located here is capable of spotting ballistic missiles shortly after they are launched. Additionally, during summer months, members of the New York Air National Guard arrive at the base to assist with scientific research missions.Pituffik marks the only U.S. military installation in Greenland and has an extensive history that dates back to World War II. Following the German occupation of Denmark in 1940, the U.S. negotiated with Denmark’s ambassador, allowing American forces to establish their presence on the island to provide defense and support against Axis powers. As President Trump’s administration pushes for enhanced connections with Greenland, including discussion of potentially integrating the island into the U.S., Pituffik stands at the forefront, embodying the intersection of military strategy and international relations.
