In brief
Greenland Airports officially opened a new international airport in Ilulissat on Thursday, after Danish authorities granted final approval. The runway can accommodate large aircraft, and the first direct flight from Copenhagen landed on the same day. Full operations will be reached by the summer 2027 season, as the airport becomes part of a three‑airport development program.
On Thursday, Greenland Airports inaugurated a new international terminal in Ilulissat, western Greenland, after Danish aviation authorities approved the facility overnight. The 2,200‑metre runway can handle large passenger planes, enabling direct connections from Copenhagen and extending reach to Disko Bay and northern Greenland.
An Air Greenland Airbus A330‑neo from Copenhagen arrived on the opening day to mark the launch of the new route. Regular winter services will begin in November, with Jettime’s Boeing 737‑800 operating weekly flights on Wednesdays and occasional Monday departures during selected periods.
Greenland Airports said the new airport will gradually expand operations, aiming for full service by the summer 2027 season. The opening completes a three‑airport development program that began with new facilities in Nuuk (November 2024) and Qaqortoq (April 2026).
Officials highlighted that the improved transport links will open opportunities for tourism, cargo, and regional business. Ilulissat, known for its iceberg displays and the nearby UNESCO World Heritage Ilulissat Icefjord, will benefit from increased visitor access.
