In a surprising twist, thousands of Norwegians thought they had become millionaires after receiving notifications from the state-owned gambling company, Norsk Tipping. Many were ecstatic, believing they had won massive prizes in the Eurojackpot. Unfortunately, the excitement was short-lived as the company later confirmed that it was all a mistake.

On Friday, a communication revealed incorrect prize amounts due to a technical error in converting Eurocents to Norwegian kroner. Instead of dividing the amount by 100, the prize amounts were mistakenly multiplied, resulting in "excessively high" sums. Norsk Tipping CEO, Tonje Sagstuen, expressed deep regret over the error and resigned just a day later.

Reports indicated that "several thousand" winners received notifications reflecting incorrect winnings, but the company assured that no erroneous payouts were actually executed. In an emotional statement, Sagstuen said, “I am terribly sorry that we have disappointed so many, and I understand that people are angry with us.”

Many individuals were dreaming of life-changing purchases, like homes and vacations, based on these erroneous figures. One woman even shared how she was in the midst of a renovation project when she thought she won 1.2 million kroner, only to discover it was a fraction of that amount.

Following the mishap, Norsk Tipping convened an emergency meeting with the Ministry of Culture, which oversees the gambling operation. Sagstuen took full responsibility for the oversight and noted it was her duty to lead improvements within the company.

Minister of Culture and Equality, Lubna Jaffery, emphasized that such blunders are unacceptable, especially since Norsk Tipping has the sole rights to provide gaming services in Norway. This isn't the first critique leveled at Norsk Tipping, as it has faced several technical errors and criticisms over the past year.
