In brief
The Services Producer Price Index (SPPI) rose 3.6% in Q3 2026, up from 2.9% in Q2, according to Xinhua. The jump was led by an 8.2% increase in arts, entertainment and recreation, a 6.5% rise in accommodation and food services, and a 6.3% spike in transportation, mainly passenger air transport. Other sectors saw moderate gains ranging from 1% to 2.2%.
Malaysia's SPPI climbed 3.6% year‑on‑year in the third quarter of 2026, accelerating from 2.9% in the second quarter, Xinhua reported Friday. The rise shows the country’s services sector is tightening its grip on inflation, with key industry wedges pushing prices higher.
Within the index, arts, entertainment and recreation led the charge, posting an 8.2% jump driven by amusement and recreation activities. This surge reflects growing demand for cultural and leisure offerings across the country.
A 6.5% increase in the accommodation and food, and beverage service index highlighted stronger hotel and restaurant activity, including mobile food services and beverage outlets.
The transportation sector gained 6.3%, largely thanks to passenger air transport. More travellers flying domestically and abroad lifted service costs for airlines and related travel firms.
Education services saw a modest 2.2% rise, while health, real estate, and professional service indices rose by 1.7%, 1.3%, and 1.0%, respectively, showing steady pressure across a range of fields.
Information and communication activities edged up 0.4%, supported by gains in data processing and computer‑related services. This nudges the technology footprint of the sector higher.
Quarter‑on‑quarter, the SPPI jumped 0.7% in Q3, a slowdown from the 1.1% rise recorded in Q2. The slower pace suggests the inflationary trajectory in services may be moderating, though year‑on‑year gains remain pronounced.
