In brief

A plane crash in South Sudan has killed 20 oil workers, leaving only one survivor. The accident is under investigation as the aviation safety record remains a concern in the region.

A tragic plane crash in South Sudan has resulted in the deaths of 20 oil workers, with only one survivor reported. The incident occurred just three minutes after take-off near the oil fields in Unity State, en route to the capital, Juba. Petroleum Minister Puot Kang Chol confirmed that among the victims were five foreign nationals, including two Chinese, one Indian, and two Ugandan crew members. The remaining 15 victims were South Sudanese nationals. While the cause of the crash is still undetermined, authorities have launched an investigation to ascertain what happened. "Our thoughts and condolences go out to the families and loved ones of those on board during this incredibly difficult time," Chol stated. The workers were employed by the Greater Pioneer Company (GPOC), and the plane was operated by Light Air Services Aviation Company. The flight was part of a routine exploration mission.Unfortunately, South Sudan's aviation is plagued by safety concerns, with accidents being relatively common due to factors like aircraft overloading and adverse weather conditions. A similar incident occurred in 2021 when a cargo plane crashed, killing five individuals.
