Eighteen miners have been successfully rescued after spending about 18 hours trapped underground at the El Minón gold mine in northwestern Colombia. The miners became stranded when equipment malfunctioned, causing a structure intended to prevent landslides to collapse and block the main exit. Local authorities reported that the operation to rescue them began on Thursday and lasted for approximately 12 hours.

Fortunately, all workers are reported to be in good health following their challenging ordeal. Video footage captured the emotional moment as the miners emerged, greeted by the cheers and applause of their fellow miners and rescue crews. The National Mining Agency (ANM) confirmed that oxygen was supplied to the trapped miners via hoses while they awaited rescue.

Local officials have indicated that the mine may have been operating without the necessary licenses. The ANM emphasized the dangers of illegal mining practices, stating these activities jeopardize the safety of workers and can lead to significant environmental damage. Mining accidents, unfortunately, occur frequently in Colombia, raising serious concerns about safety standards in the industry.
