In a heartbreaking event on Sunday, a gunman fatally shot two women, aged 72 and 32, at the Richmond Road Baptist Church in Lexington, Kentucky. This came after he allegedly shot a police officer nearby. Authorities reported that two male parishioners were also injured in the chaos. The shooter, who was later killed by police, had ties to individuals at the church. Kentucky's Governor Andy Beshear expressed his sorrow on social media, stressing that "violence like this has no place in our commonwealth or country."
The incident began at 11:36 AM local time when a state trooper stopped the suspect's vehicle near Blue Grass Airport. After being shot, the suspect fled, carjacking another vehicle and heading towards the church, about 16 miles away, with police in pursuit. The injured trooper is currently in stable condition.
