In Tianshui City, Gansu province, parents are anxious as their kids fall ill after eating steamed red date cake and sausage corn rolls. The principal reportedly instructed kitchen staff to buy non-food-grade paint online for decorative purposes.

Just recently, tests revealed alarming lead levels of 1052mg/kg in the cake and 1340mg/kg in the rolls, far exceeding China's food safety standard of 0.5mg/kg. Following parent complaints about kids experiencing stomach pain and a loss of appetite since March, local authorities launched an investigation.

The video from the kindergarten’s kitchen, allegedly showing staff adding the hazardous pigment, has sparked outrage. Tianshui’s mayor announced they would address the weaknesses in food safety traces revealed by this scandal. As the investigation continues, families remain worried about the lingering health effects of lead exposure on their children.
