In brief
The Nikkei slid 0.33 percent to 63,081.86 and the Topix dropped 0.88 percent to 3,930.28. Heavyweights like Advantest and Tokyo Electron briefly lifted the index, but AI‑related stocks weighed on sentiment as investors questioned the profitability of large AI investments. The decline underscores growing risk aversion ahead of the U.S. elections.
Xinhua reported that Tokyo stocks slipped on Monday as investors stayed cautious ahead of the U.S. midterm elections and a Japanese market holiday.
The benchmark Nikkei fell 208.25 points, or 0.33 percent, to 63,081.86. The broader Topix dropped 34.79 points, or 0.88 percent, to 3,930.28.
After a lower opening, the Nikkei briefly climbed into positive territory as heavyweights such as Advantest and Tokyo Electron attracted buying following the index’s more than 2‑percent decline on Friday. The benchmark later retreated into negative territory and finished the session slightly lower.
The Topix was also weighed down by declines in AI‑related stocks, as analysts said concerns over the sustainability and profitability of massive investments in artificial intelligence grew.
