In brief

Despite sparing Russia from new tariffs, President Trump's trade war is causing oil prices to drop, potentially harming Russia's economy more than anticipated sanctions.

President Trump made a controversial decision to exempt Russia from tariffs imposed on 180 nations in a bid to transform global trade dynamics. However, this choice doesn’t shield the nation from negative economic fallout. Since Trump's tariff announcement on April 2, oil prices—a crucial component of Russia's economy—have tumbled by nearly 15%, which raises alarms about a possible global recession. This week, Trump temporarily suspended most tariffs for 90 days, but the long-term economic effects remain concerning. If oil prices continue to decline, Russia may have to start cutting spending by this summer, which analysts warn could ultimately affect military funding. Ironically, these trade measures poses a greater threat to Russia's ability to finance its war efforts in Ukraine than the extensive sanctions imposed by the West. Before this economic turmoil, President Vladimir Putin appeared to be gaining momentum in the conflict, with Trump's administration moving closer to him and challenging European allies supporting Ukraine. Additionally, a trade rift between the U.S. and China could further complicate matters, potentially offering Russia an unexpected advantage as it seeks to establish a multi-polar world.
