In brief

Moscow will stage the 2030 World Weightlifting Championships, the first major global competition in Russia since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) announced the decision after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) provisionally lifted the suspension on the Russian Olympic Committee. While athletes can compete, the IOC has not yet decided on the use of Russia’s flag, colours or anthem at the Games. The move signals a gradual reintegration of Russian sports on the world stage and opens the door for Russian athletes to return to Olympic events. Leading officials praised Moscow’s infrastructure and experience, and the championships will also serve as a qualifier for the 2032 Brisbane Olympics.

Russia to host the 2030 World Weightlifting Championships

Moscow will host the 2030 World Weightlifting Championships, the first time an Olympic federation has chosen to stage a global event in Russia since the full‑scale invasion of Ukraine began in 2022.

What triggered the decision?

The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) announced the selection four months after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) provisionally lifted a suspension on the Russian Olympic Committee. The IOC’s move opened the door for Russian athletes to compete under their flag at the 2028 Los Angeles Games and for other Olympic federations to reconsider Russian participation.

Why is this significant?

No world championship in an Olympic sport has been held in Russia since the start of the war. The 2025 Aquatics Championships were moved from Kazan to Singapore, and the last World Weightlifting Championships in the city took place in 1983.

The IWF also announced other world championships: the 2029 senior event will be in Ahmedabad, India. “All the bids we received were excellent and we are sure that the championships in your respective countries will be a huge success,” said IWF general secretary Jose Quinones.

“Russia has all the necessary experience and capabilities to host competitions of the highest level,” praised Federation president Aleksandr Vinokurov on Telegram.

The championships will also serve as a qualifying event for the 2032 Brisbane Olympics.

Ongoing tensions

The IOC has said it will not organise events in Russia or invite Russian government officials to its events. Ukraine has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport to annul the IOC decision.

Five Ukrainian athletes are listed to compete in the 2026 IWF World Championships in Ningbo, China.
