Three of the Norwegians died on the spot, while a fourth, a woman, succumbed to severe hypothermia and cardiorespiratory arrest in a nearby hospital. The group of seven skiers, all equipped with avalanche beacons, was engaged in off-piste skiing, which is much more perilous than marked trails. Jacques Arnoux, the mayor of Val-Cenis, emphasized the size of the avalanche, which was triggered outside the ski area.

In the northern region, the Swiss victim, a 30-year-old woman, was skiing alongside her brother, who was hospitalized for tests, and their father, who fortunately escaped unharmed. They, too, were skiing off-piste and had anti-avalanche airbags. This incident follows another tragedy where a 55-year-old Brazilian-Portuguese skier died in a massive avalanche on Mont Blanc’s off-piste section.
