The French Alps experienced a heartbreaking tragedy this Tuesday as a massive avalanche claimed the life of a 55-year-old skier near Mont Blanc. The avalanche, measuring 1km long and 400m wide, occurred in an off-piste area at the popular Les Grands Montets resort around 16:35 local time. Initial reports mistakenly identified the victim as British, but local officials confirmed he was a dual Brazilian-Portuguese national.

Ski patrol was in the area to issue warnings about worsening conditions when they noticed the avalanche. Rescue teams quickly responded, but sadly, the skier was pronounced dead at the scene. The PGHM (Chamonix High Mountain Gendarmerie Platoon) has stated that no further casualties have been reported. Authorities in Haute-Savoie are urging all skiers to exercise caution and adhere to safety guidelines, especially with the high avalanche risk prevalent this January.
