In brief
Authorities urge caution, advising against large indoor gatherings while monitoring the tremors that have rattled the beloved tourist spot.
In a precautionary measure, schools on the stunning Greek island of Santorini are set to close on Monday following a spike in seismic activity. Tremors up to 4.6 in magnitude have occurred, with nearby quakes recorded at 4.3 and 3.9 on Sunday. While the movements are classified as minor and are not linked to volcanic activity, officials are recommending preventive measures. This includes avoiding large gatherings in enclosed spaces and steering clear of the busy ports of Ammoudi and Fira, where cruise ships often dock. It’s worth noting that a significant volcanic eruption around 1600 BC shaped the island into the iconic landscape it is today. Despite the ongoing tremors, authorities maintain that the recent seismic changes are subsiding and are closely monitoring the situation for any further developments.
