On a rainy day in May, parents gathered in Rüthen, Germany, to watch their kids race go-karts while military recruiters promoted army careers. But the atmosphere was tense—many parents were uneasy with the military's outreach to children. "I think it’s terrible that they advertise to kids,” said Manuel Fleigner, reflecting a deep-seated concern about a military past.

Germany aims to eliminate its historical militaristic image. However, with rising tensions from Russia and decreased American support, officials urgently seek to alter this mindset. A June survey revealed that only 17% of Germans would defend the nation if faced with an attack.

“Younger people don’t really see the purpose of why they should put their lives at risk for Germany,” noted Aylin Matlé, highlighting the stark challenge ahead for recruiters. Reversing the trend will require innovative strategies to engage the youth while overcoming societal fears linked to Germany's past.
