The watch officer of a large container ship that crashed into a garden in Norway has been charged with negligent navigation after admitting he fell asleep while on duty. The Ukrainian man, in his thirties, was responsible for steering the NCL Salten when it ran ashore on Thursday morning in Byneset, near Trondheim. According to investigators, the crew’s adherence to work and rest hour regulations is also under scrutiny.

The massive ship, measuring 135 meters (443 feet), narrowly missed a nearby home, coming dangerously close to entering the resident's bedroom. Local media revealed the officer failed to change course while navigating through the Trondheim Fjord. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, despite the panic caused among neighbors.

Logistics company NCL labeled the incident as "serious," expressing relief that no one was harmed and reaffirming its commitment to aiding police with their ongoing investigation. Johan Helberg, the property owner startled by the ship's appearance, described the surreal moment he looked out his window to find the vessel within just five meters of entering his home.

Witness accounts shared how alarming the situation was, with neighbors feeling fear and disbelief as they watched the ship approach. In a twist of fate, the vessel had previously run aground earlier this year but was freed by its crew. As authorities continue salvage efforts, the community is anxious for the return to normalcy.
