The Minecraft Movie, based on the iconic video game, has taken the film world by storm, raking in an estimated $300 million (£233 million) during its debut weekend. After a long wait, fans finally saw the film hit theaters on Friday, featuring a star-studded lineup that includes Jason Momoa, Jack Black, and Jennifer Coolidge. The estimates indicate that the film’s earnings eclipsed its budget of $150 million, with nearly half of its total box office coming from North America, as reported by EntTelligence.
Although critics offered lukewarm responses—The Telegraph rated it two stars and The Guardian a mere one star—the audiences didn’t hesitate to flock to theaters. Steve Buck, chief strategy officer at EntTelligence, noted that the film exceeded all industry forecasts and resonated with various viewership demographics, especially families. Around 25% of the audience was under 13 and over half were male. Buck emphasized the importance of family appeal with, “When dads like a family film, that’s a good thing.”
The film has claimed the title for the largest domestic opening of 2025 so far and marks Warner Bros’ most significant launch since 2023. Given that Minecraft boasts remarkable sales figures—over 300 million copies sold—there's a lot of pressure to please fans of the beloved game. In pre-release comments, Black acknowledged the film's significance to millions of fans around the globe, calling it a “big deal.” With a mixed record of video game adaptations, the Minecraft Movie stands out alongside successful expressions like Sonic and The Super Mario Bros Movie.
