Australia is reeling from a recent arson attack on a synagogue in Melbourne, igniting a commitment from Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to leverage “the full force of law” against antisemitism. The incident occurred on Friday night when a man doused the synagogue's entrance with liquid before lighting it on fire. Fortunately, around 20 individuals dining within were safely evacuated with no injuries reported.
As police investigate, there are concerns this incident may connect to an earlier attack at the Miznon restaurant, also in Melbourne, where rioters shouted hostile slogans against the Israeli military. These violent actions come amid escalating tensions tied to the Israel-Hamas conflict, causing a notable increase in antisemitic incidents across Australia in recent months.
In response, the Australian government appointed a dedicated envoy for antisemitism and has enacted stricter laws aimed at curbing hate crimes. Albanese reaffirmed, “Antisemitism has no place in Australia,” emphasizing the need for accountability for those perpetrating these acts. The situation has drawn widespread attention, with advocacy for the Jewish community urging the government to adopt more robust measures against what they deem a “severe escalation” of hostility.
The Israeli Foreign Minister also voiced concerns about the growing antisemitism in Australia, calling for further action against this “toxic disease.” As tensions related to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East rise, both Jewish and Muslim communities have faced increased scrutiny and discrimination.
