In brief
The Taiwanese Coast Guard is probing a potential act of sabotage after a cargo ship crewed by Chinese nationals was detained, believed to be involved in severing an undersea communications cable linking Taiwan and the Penghu Islands.
Taiwan has detained a cargo ship manned by Chinese nationals amid suspicions that it may have intentionally or accidentally severed an undersea communications cable near the island. This incident marks a continued pattern of unexplained events that have led some to wonder if China and Russia are resorting to sabotaging cables as a form of maritime intimidation.Authorities reported that the damaged cable connects Taiwan to its Penghu Islands, located about 30 miles off the main island. The naval exercise was reported to have occurred early Tuesday morning, raising concerns over the nature of the cable break.According to Ou Yu-fei, a Coast Guard press officer, early evidence suggests the detained ship, referred to as “Hong Tai 58” among other names, was the only vessel in the vicinity at the time. “We’re not ruling out the possibility that it was engaged in an act of sabotage,” he indicated, emphasizing the ongoing investigation into the incident. This ship was allegedly using a false registration number, and its name reportedly changed suddenly, further deepening suspicions around its operations.Investigators noted that the vessel might have combined the timing of its departure with the incident to execute sabotage, coinciding with a warning from a Chinese coast guard ship instructing it to vacate the area. As investigations continue, clarity regarding the motivations and intentions behind this act remains uncertain.
