Residents of Russia's Belgorod region say blackouts, air-raid sirens, and the sound of gunfire aimed at incoming Ukrainian drones are becoming increasingly common as Kyiv retaliates against repeated bombardments of its cities with cross-border strikes. It's so loud and so terrifying, says Nina, a Belgorod resident. I was coming back from the clinic when a siren went off… I tried to hide under an arch.”
Drone strikes from Ukraine have jumped nearly fourfold since the beginning of 2025. In September alone, they recorded over 4,000 incidents, a drastic increase from 1,100 in January. While Ukraine faces significant losses from Russian assaults, including civilian casualties and infrastructure damage, Belgorod’s residents now face similar fears.
Local testimonies describe the shock and chaos of missile alerts, flickering lights, and intense sounds of devastation in the once tranquil region. Authorities highlight the attacks as a direct response to Russia's ongoing assaults on Ukraine, indicating a shift in the conflict's reach and impact on daily life.
Belgorod serves as a key logistical hub for Russian forces, turning it into a target for Ukrainian drones. The consequences are dire: widespread power outages, fuel shortages, and a palpable anxiety that has gripped the community.
Despite measures to enhance air defenses with armed units deployed, residents feel the repercussions of the escalating conflict more personally than ever, echoing sentiments shared by Ukrainians living under constant threat.
