China is holding military drills around Taiwan simulating the seizure and blockade of the island's key areas, as a warning against separatist forces. The army, navy, air force, and rocket force have been dispatched for the drills which include live-fire exercises, the Chinese military said.
Codenamed 'Justice Mission 2025', the drills come just days after the US announced the sale of a significant weapons package to Taiwan worth $11 billion (£8.2 billion), sparking sharp protests from Beijing, which subsequently sanctioned US defense firms.
Taiwan's government has criticized these military drills, stating they challenge international norms. The Taiwanese defense ministry reported detecting numerous Chinese military aircraft and warships near Taiwan and has deployed its own missile systems in response, maintaining a heightened alert status to protect its sovereignty.
The Chinese military described the upcoming drills as a shield of justice against anyone supporting Taiwanese independence. The exercises are set to take place throughout various locations surrounding Taiwan and are reportedly intended to demonstrate China's resolve against perceived external threats.
Taiwan's transport ministry has noted that significant disruptions could occur to both international and domestic flights due to these drills, affecting more than 100,000 passengers.
Taiwan, standing firm on its defense strategy amidst these provocations, continues to assert its sovereignty despite the increasing military pressure from China.
