At least seven people were killed in Russian strikes across Ukraine overnight, including five in the central city of Dnipro, where officials reported an apartment building was severely damaged. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the attacks persisted throughout the night, with emergency responders conducting rescue operations and searching for survivors under the rubble in Dnipro on Saturday morning.
Adding to the tension, British jets were deployed from Romania during this heavy assault as Russian drones approached near the border. However, the UK Ministry of Defence clarified that they did not engage any drones. Amidst the assaults, Ukraine launched drone strikes deep into Russian territory, causing injuries in Yekaterinburg and prompting Russian authorities to claim they intercepted multiple drones.
The attacks predominantly targeted urban centers, damaging infrastructure, residential buildings, and energy facilities. Zelensky criticized Russia’s tactics, which have consistently aimed at civilian infrastructure. This recent strike was regarded as one of the largest attacks in days, highlighting the ongoing volatility in the region.
While Ukrainian authorities claimed they defended against most of the over 600 Russian drones launched in this wave, the situation remains critical as diplomatic efforts for peace continue to stall. Recently, Zelensky engaged with Gulf allies to discuss air defense cooperation, as Ukraine seeks to bolster its defenses amidst ongoing hostilities.
