Ukraine and Russia have each accused one another of hundreds of violations of a short ceasefire coinciding with Orthodox Easter celebrations.
The Ukrainian military stated on Sunday that Russian forces committed 2,299 violations since the truce began at 16:00 local time (13:00 GMT) on Saturday.
In response, the Russian defense ministry reported that Ukrainian forces committed 1,971 violations, including three attempted counter-attacks in Dnipropetrovsk. President Volodymyr Zelensky remarked that Easter should be a time of peace and promised a 'symmetrical' response to Russian actions.
Zelensky expressed hope for extending the truce beyond Easter for peace negotiations now hampered by ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, but Russia dismissed this suggestion, claiming its operations would resume on Monday.
Despite 28 attacks and nearly 2,000 drone strikes reported by Ukraine, Russia's military actions were said to avoid use of bombs and missiles. Incidents included a drone hitting an ambulance in Sumy, which injured three medics.
Both Ukraine and Russia mentioned they swapped 175 prisoners of war on Saturday, underscoring the humanitarian aspect of the conflict. Yet, civilians on the frontline remain skeptical about the ceasefire's effectiveness, with Ukraine continuing to call for a more comprehensive peace deal.
The situation is intricate, as Russia insists on pre-agreed terms for peace before ceasing hostilities, raising doubts about its commitment to a genuine resolution.
