A leaking tanker truck spewed dangerous gas in a hotel parking lot, forcing hundreds of residents in Weatherford, Oklahoma, to evacuate and sending several dozen people to the hospital, authorities reported. Emergency workers, equipped with gas masks, went door-to-door alerting residents of the urgent need to leave due to fumes from a leak of anhydrous ammonia. Approximately 30 individuals were taken to local hospitals, with several reportedly in critical condition. The evacuation affected at least 500 to 600 residents, and some nursing homes were also evacuated, leading to school closures in the area. city officials stated around 70 miles west of Oklahoma City. The leak is thought to have stemmed from mechanical failure of the tanker truck's valve or seal, as it was parked in the hotel parking lot. Anhydrous ammonia, a colorless gas with a pungent odor used in fertilizers, can be deadly in high concentrations or cause respiratory issues. The situation has improved and authorities are now focused on monitoring air quality and conducting cleanup efforts.
