Officials have identified more than 1,000 available hotel and rental options in Anchorage as the city welcomes evacuees displaced by Typhoon Halong. The typhoon severely impacted Alaskan communities, prompting a mass evacuation to Anchorage. The municipal manager, Becky Windt Pearson, emphasized efforts to provide safe and comfortable accommodations beyond the initial shelters.
On Monday, about 338 individuals were still in shelters. With winter approaching, local officials strive to ensure all evacuees have suitable housing before colder weather arrives. Ongoing assessments may necessitate additional evacuations as residents continue to evaluate their housing situations.
Military aircraft have facilitated the relocation of over 650 people from the most affected regions. The storm resulted in devastating conditions in the Yup’ik villages of Kipnuk and Kwigillingok, which remain accessible only by air and water. Relief crews are working to clean up debris and make necessary repairs amid mounting challenges from changing weather conditions.
