Two people have been found dead as a huge wildfire tears through northern Greece. The blaze forced residents of Liti to evacuate.
The fire, which ignited around 2:30 pm local time (11:30 GMT), rapidly spread across 5 km of flames. More than 100 firefighters, dozens of engines and at least seven aircraft are battling the blaze.
A charred man’s body was found near Liti, while a second body was discovered later in a forested house. A woman with burn injuries was rescued and is now stable in hospital, and a 12‑year‑old child remains missing.
Greek authorities warned of high fire‑risk conditions due to dry weather and strong winds, which have led to repeated flare‑ups. The fire is moving toward the village of Melissochori, threatening local homes.
This incident marks another severe fire as Greece heads into its peak tourist season, where wildfires have become common during summer droughts and heatwaves.
