A man has been arrested after three men were injured in a suspected knife attack in Stoneybatter, north Dublin. The Irish police, referred to as Gardaí, were summoned to what they described as a "serious incident" on Sunday afternoon, which Justice Minister Jim O'Callaghan characterized as a "random attack". Two of the victims are reported to have serious but non-life-threatening injuries, while the third sustained a less serious injury. All three have been taken to the hospital for treatment, with reports stating they suffered "slashing type injuries".
The arrested individual is currently in custody at a police station, as emergency teams and a large police presence responded to the scene, which spanned several streets in the Arbour Hill area. Local Sinn Féin president Mary Lou McDonald expressed her concern for the victims and their families via a post on X, stating, "The community is in a state of shock," while praising the swift response from the Gardaí and emergency services.
Meanwhile, O'Callaghan is staying updated on the situation, and police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, noting that multiple crime scenes remain cordoned off. Authorities have reassured the public there is no ongoing threat. They are also requesting anyone who witnessed the event, particularly individuals in the area between 14:30 GMT and 15:30 GMT, to come forward with any relevant video footage.
Local Fine Gael councillor Ray McAdam mentioned that residents were advised to secure their homes during the incident. While there’s a "level of shock, a level of concern," he emphasized the community's hope that the victims will recover swiftly, appreciating the rapid police response that helped ease residents’ fears.
