James Burrows, the Comedy Mastermind, Dies at 85
James “Jimmy” Burrows, the legendary director who helped make Cheers, Friends, and Big Bang Theory, has died at 85. He directed over 1,000 TV episodes and won 11 Emmy awards during a more than 50‑year career.
From co‑creating the hit sitcom Cheers to directing icons like Ted Danson and Lisa Kudrow, Burrows’ influence spans generations. He was a mentor to countless actors and directors, guiding them to bring laughter to millions.
He spent his early years in Los Angeles and New York, and earned a graduate degree in drama at Yale before stepping behind the camera.
Acting and industry peers have paid tribute: Eric McCormack praised his “incredible legacy,” while Lisa Kudrow wrote on Instagram, “Thank you Jimmy. I mean, for everything…”
His family announced that he “passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family.” Burrows’ career earned him 48 Emmy nominations, five Directors Guild of America awards, and a lifetime achievement honour in 2015.
