Kenyans who were enlisted to fight for Russia in the war against Ukraine will be granted amnesty upon their return, as announced by the country's foreign minister, Musalia Mudavadi. This comes after Mudavadi's recent engagements in Moscow, which included negotiations that halted further recruitments of Kenyans for the Russian military.
Under Kenyan law, it is illegal for citizens to be conscripted into foreign armies, a violation that can carry up to a 10-year prison sentence. Reports indicate that approximately 252 Kenyans have been wrongly conscripted, with many claiming they were lured with attractive job offers only to end up fighting.
Mudavadi confirmed that 44 Kenyans have returned safely while others remain unaccounted for or hospitalized. He further emphasized the importance of addressing human trafficking and illegal recruitment into foreign conflicts as part of ongoing diplomatic efforts. The amnesty will also cover Kenyans currently unwilling to continue fighting, allowing them to return home.
