Kilmar Abrego Garcia entered the news in March 2025 after being deported to El Salvador despite a court ruling preventing it. His legal fight has become emblematic of the heated debates surrounding the immigration policies put in place during President Donald Trump’s administration.
Abrego Garcia first fled to the United States from El Salvador as a teenager around 2011, seeking safety from gang threats. He was arrested on March 28, 2019, outside a Maryland hardware store, accused of gang affiliation, and subsequently turned over to ICE.
On October 10, 2019, a Maryland immigration judge ruled against his deportation due to safety concerns, allowing him to obtain a work permit. However, on March 12, 2025, he was re-arrested by ICE while driving with his young son.
After a chain of events leading to his mistaken deportation to El Salvador on March 15, he was held in a notorious prison. The U.S. Supreme Court later ordered his return. Once back, he faced further legal difficulties, including criminal charges for alleged human smuggling.
As of 2026, Abrego Garcia is embroiled in a complicated legal situation with ongoing threats of deportation, highlighting the complexities and challenges faced by immigrants under U.S. law.
