Authorities in Los Angeles used tear gas near a federal detention center, leading to multiple arrests during one of the numerous ‘No Kings’ rallies held across the United States and Europe this weekend. These protests focused on opposing President Donald Trump’s actions and the ongoing war in Iran.
Although most demonstrations remained peaceful, LA police reported that 74 people were taken into custody after a dispersal order following the rally was ignored. In total, over 3,100 events took place across the nation, showcasing widespread public dissent.
Violence erupted in downtown Los Angeles, where protesters clashed with police, throwing rocks and other objects. Among injuries reported were two officers hit by concrete blocks.
Independent journalist Andre Andrews Jr. documented the events, noting that after authorities deployed tear gas, some protesters retaliated by throwing it back. "The peaceful protest was good for the cause," Andrews stated, acknowledging that the actions of some individuals marred the event.
Across the nation, protests varied in size and impact, from large gatherings in populous cities to smaller demonstrations in rural areas. Noteworthy events included a major rally in Minnesota featuring Bruce Springsteen, aimed at celebrating resistance to Trump's immigration policies.
Co-executive director of Indivisible, Ezra Levin, reported that these protests drew more than 8 million participants, marking a significant moment in America's political landscape.
With ongoing calls for change, the movement seeks to highlight public dissent against governmental actions and call for greater social justice, leaving a powerful impression on participants and observers alike.
