Rafael Tudares, the son-in-law of Venezuelan opposition candidate Edmundo González, has been released from prison, his wife has said, more than a year after he was detained as part of a crackdown on Maduro government critics and their relatives.

Mariana González said her husband had returned home after 380 days of unjust and arbitrary detention. Tudares is one of over 150 detainees released since the U.S. military seized Venezuelan leader, Nicolás Maduro, and took him to New York on drug-trafficking charges.

Despite his release, an NGO warns that 777 political prisoners remain behind bars. Tension remains high in Venezuela as Maduro's former vice-president, Delcy Rodríguez, is now in power, having received backing from U.S. President Donald Trump.

Mariana González took to social media to thank supporters while stressing that many families still await the return of their loved ones. Rights groups continue to criticize the slow pace of releases and the ongoing legal turmoil for those freed. Tudares's case symbolizes the increased repression post the controversial 2024 presidential election, wherein González stood as a challenger to Maduro's rule.
