In brief

Elon Musk floated the possibility of a Tesla‑SpaceX merger during a quarterly call, saying it would be a good idea but not guaranteed. Special committees at both firms are studying the proposal, though no terms have been set. Valued at roughly $1.5 trillion and $2 trillion respectively, a combine would be the largest merger on record. Musk will not sit on the committees, citing a conflict of interest, and the deal would need over 50 % shareholder approval—a high hurdle. The merger, if it goes forward, could rewrite the rules for electric vehicles and space tech.

Musk Mulls a Mega Merger of Tesla & SpaceX, two of his biggest companies, during a call with analysts about SpaceX’s latest earnings. “Do I think it would be a good idea? Yes,” he said, but added the deal is not set in stone and would need shareholder approval.

Special committees have been set up at both firms to study the proposal, but no terms have been agreed yet, Musk said. “There’s no guarantee they’ll reach an agreement,” he noted, while highlighting the potential upside.

If it happened, the combined company would be worth roughly $3.5 trillion—possibly the biggest merger ever in the tech‑space world. With Tesla at $1.5 trillion and SpaceX at $2 trillion, the deal could reshape how we think about EVs and rockets.

Musk clarified he’s not part of the committees, as “a conflicted party” given his CEO roles at both companies. He likened the situation to “tap dancing through a minefield,” explaining the complexity and risk.

Shareholders would need over 50 % of Tesla’s votes to approve the merger—a high hurdle, Musk said. The outcome remains uncertain, but the idea could spark a new era of innovation.
