William Duplessie, a 32-year-old suspect, turned himself in to police this Tuesday, joining his accomplice, John Woeltz, who had been arrested just days earlier. They are accused of kidnapping and torturing an Italian tourist in a lavish Manhattan residence, reportedly to steal his cryptocurrency. The victim endured horrific abuse, including being hung from a roof, electric shocks, and chainsaw attacks as the suspects demanded his Bitcoin wallet password.
Both men face charges that include kidnapping for ransom and unlawful imprisonment. The victim escaped after nearly three weeks of captivity and reported the disturbing details to authorities. Police found evidence of the torture, including Polaroid photos of the victim and illegal firearms in the upscale home, which Woeltz rented for thousands a month.
Additionally, in a related incident across the ocean in France, authorities arrested over 20 individuals involved in separate kidnapping schemes targeting cryptocurrency investors.
