Nigerian President Bola Tinubu hosted the nation’s victorious women’s football team, the Super Falcons, at Aso Rock after their stunning win at the Women's Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon). The team, which recently defeated Morocco 3-2 in the finals, was promised $100,000 (£75,000) each, along with three-bedroom apartments, sparking cheers among the 24-woman squad.

During the celebration, Tinubu praised their achievement, calling it a "triumph of courage, determination, and consistency," despite acknowledging the stress that came with the match. On their return to the capital, Abuja, the team received a raucous welcome featuring traditional dancers and journalists. The president honored each player and staff member with the Officer of the Order of the Niger award, stating it was a gesture from a "grateful nation."

Captain Rasheedat Ajibade emphasized the victory as inspiration for young girls aspiring to follow their dreams. While celebrating this win, concerns loom over the past unfulfilled promises regarding bonuses and salaries to both men's and women's teams. The Super Falcons have historically faced delays in payments, sometimes leading to protests during tournaments.

In a bid to change this trend, Tinubu approved backdated payments and match allowances ahead of the final, signaling a commitment to ensure proper support in the future. With the Super Falcons having won 10 of 13 Wafcon editions since 1998, the journey towards pay equity with the men’s team, the Super Eagles, continues to be a topic of discussion in Nigerian football.
