Legendary Indian cricketer Virat Kohli has officially announced his immediate retirement from Test cricket. This news arrives just ahead of the highly anticipated five-Test series in England starting June 20. The 36-year-old has left a monumental mark after playing 123 Tests, amassing a stunning 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85.
Kohli took to social media to express his sentiments, saying, "It’s been 14 years since I first wore the baggy blue in Test cricket. Honestly, I never imagined the journey this format would take me on." He shared how Test cricket has profoundly impacted his life, teaching him invaluable lessons along the way.
Although Kohli stepped back from T20 internationals after India's World Cup win in 2024, he is set to continue his one-day international career. His Test debut against the West Indies in 2011 led to him captaining India in 68 matches—making him the country’s most successful Test captain with 40 victories.
Kohli described Test cricket as "deeply personal," emphasizing the intensity, focus, and memorable quiet moments that define the format. As he leaves this chapter, he carries immense gratitude for the game, his teammates, and the supporters. Known as one of the batting greats of his era alongside legends like Joe Root and Steve Smith, Kohli has scored an impressive 30 Test centuries. Despite facing recent challenges, his contributions to the sport remain unmatched, concluding a remarkable era in Indian cricket.
