The new icon is roughly two double‑decker buses longer than Rio de Janeiro’s smaller‑but‑more‑prominently‑placed Christ the Redeemer, though it still falls short of the 98‑metre Virgin Mary erected in the Philippines.

A local bishop consecrated the statue on Saturday, chosen to coincide with the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. He told the gathered crowd that many contemporary people look only to the earth, urging the faithful to raise our gaze upward to God and heaven during a ceremony attended by a helicopter‑flecked array of rose petals.

The monument’s remote setting – a field miles from Poland’s cities – was largely due to a commission from a wealthy local couple, reflecting the church’s waning influence on public life. Young city dwellers increasingly turn away from tradition, yet the statue remains a striking symbol of faith.
