Osama Krayem, a 32-year-old Swedish citizen, has been charged with war and terrorism crimes related to the brutal execution of Lt. Moaz al-Kasasbeh, who was captured by ISIS after his plane went down near Raqqa in December 2014. The shocking incident, which involved a video of the pilot being burned alive in a cage, sent ripples of horror across Jordan and the world.
Krayem is currently serving a 30-year sentence for his role in the 2015 Paris attacks that claimed 130 lives and for plotting a separate attack on Amsterdam airport. He has denied the latest charges, as reported by the Swedish broadcaster SVT. His trial is set to start on June 4, 2024.
Sweden's Prosecution Authority revealed details of the charges, stating that Krayem was armed and masked while forcing the pilot into a metal cage, which was then ignited by his accomplices, leading to the pilot's death. Originally from Malmo, Krayem reportedly traveled to Syria in September 2014 to join ISIS.
Jordan had sought to secure the pilot's release before his tragic death, highlighting the ongoing conflict and the risks faced by those fighting against extremist groups during the turmoil in Syria.
