Italian authorities have made a huge breakthrough in the art world, uncovering a massive European criminal network that was forging and selling paintings by well-known modern artists. Affected artists include the elusive Banksy, the legendary Andy Warhol, and the masterful Pablo Picasso.

In total, over 2,100 fake artworks were recovered, with the collection potentially worth around €200 million ($213 million). The operation led to the arrest of 38 individuals involved in the intricate forgery scheme. Authorities discovered six different forgery workshops, including two in Tuscany, and the rest scattered across Europe.

Those arrested now face serious charges, ranging from conspiracy to forgery and illegal sale of artworks. The investigation was sparked in 2023 when around 200 counterfeit artworks were seized from a businessman in Pisa, revealing a larger web of deceit. The forgeries included pieces by more than 30 renowned artists like Vincent Van Gogh, Claude Monet, and Salvador Dali.

Pisa’s Chief Prosecutor has labeled this operation as one of the biggest efforts to protect Banksy’s legacy, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding the integrity of art. Despite being one of today’s most recognized artists, Banksy’s real identity remains a mystery. This arrest is only the latest in a series of incidents illustrating how valuable and sought-after his works truly are.
