A Russian general has been killed in a car bombing in Moscow, officials have said. Russia's Investigative Committee stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov died on Monday morning when an explosive device, planted under a car, detonated.

Sarvarov, aged 56, was the head of the armed forces' operational training department. According to the committee, one theory being investigated is that the bomb was planted with the involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services; however, Ukraine has not commented.

Investigators have visited the scene, which is located in a car park near an apartment block in southern Moscow. Images from the area depict a badly damaged white car, with the doors blown out, surrounded by other vehicles in the parking lot.

Since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia in February 2022, several Russian military officials have been targeted in the capital. Notably, Gen Yaroslav Moskalik was killed in another car bomb attack in April. Additionally, Gen Igor Kirillov died in December 2024 when a device concealed in a scooter was remotely detonated. A Ukrainian source indicated Kirillov's death was orchestrated by Ukraine's security service, although this has never been confirmed officially; Ukraine policy typically does not acknowledge responsibility for attacks of this nature.
