Federal immigration officers shot and wounded two people outside a hospital in Portland, Oregon on Thursday. The incident occurred just a day after another officer shot and killed a woman in Minnesota, prompting heightened tensions and concern within the community. The FBI has opened an investigation into the shooting, which took place around 2:15 p.m. near the hospital.
According to the Portland Police Bureau, officers responded to a report of gunfire and later found the injured individuals a couple of miles away, confirming that their injuries were linked to the federal agents involved in the incident.
Authorities stated that both individuals are alive and updates on their conditions are awaited. City officials, including Council President Elana Pirtle-Guiney, have reacted with concerns about the escalating violence and its implications.
In light of recent events, Portland Mayor Keith Wilson and the city council called for an end to all Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations in the area until a full investigation is completed. They asserted, We cannot sit by while constitutional protections erode and bloodshed mounts.
The incident has raised fears of protests and civil unrest, especially since U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley urged individuals to remain peaceful, cautioning against the potential for provocation. Local officials expressed unity in their commitment to protect the community's civil and human rights amid ongoing scrutiny over federal enforcement practices.
