SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth expressed support for South Korea’s military budget increase during his recent visit. He stated that the increase of 8.2% would aid in modernizing military capabilities, allowing South Korea to better defend itself against potential North Korean provocations.
In a meeting with South Korean Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back, Hegseth highlighted the necessity of enhancing South Korea's defense rather than solely relying on U.S. assistance. This budget boost is seen as a strategic move to counter regional threats and bolster the alliance between the two nations.
The conversation underscored the critical security environment both countries acknowledge, with Hegseth asserting, Our alliance is stronger than ever. The discussions also pointed towards future collaborations in military capabilities, including the maintenance of U.S. warships in South Korea.
However, the meeting remained notable for the absence of a joint statement, which is unusual, sparking speculation on the discussions that took place.
